FAI Schools Primary 5s National Finals
Aviva Stadium Dublin
On Wednesday 11th June the Boys Soccer team from St Mary’s NS Threemilehouse along with their supporters from 2nd class to 6th class, staff, families and friends travelled to Dublin to watch the school team playing in the national finals.
The buses departed in the early hours. The excitement was palpable amongst the children and the team.
There was much energy and a buzz on the buses en route to the capital. The thoughts and dreams of what lay ahead was in everybody’s heads. The first thrill of the day was going over the Mary Mc Aleese bridge! Later the children enjoyed going through the port tunnel and they asked many questions about it! There was a tremendous cheer when we saw in the sunlight the view of the Aviva in the distance as we exited the tunnel!
We were all very happy to reach the impressive Aviva Stadium. Many of us had never been to it previously. There were hundreds of children there from all corners of the country, all supporting their team, all hoping that they would be the ones to bring home the cup. We observed the colourful face paints, the hair sprayed to support the team, the teddies, the banners and the flags. What a spectacle.
The children were delighted to get seating right beside the pitch. The scene was electric, with colour, music and large screens displaying each school’s name.
It was time to have lunch before the important opening game at 11.30am. With all the cheering and chanting it is little wonder that there could have been a few nervous players on the pitch as they came out to do their warm up. We joined our very own Pat Mc Cabe as he sang Amhrán na bhFiann.
The team from St Mary’s were kitted out in their yellow, representing Ulster, provided by the FAI. Leinster wore blue, Munster wore red and Connaught wore green.
The first match was against a fiery Glanduff NS team from Co Roscommon. Despite being four goals down, our boys came back strongly and the final score was 5: 3. In the second half they displayed much skill, grit and determination but time ran out alas.
The second game was against a team from Co Wicklow. They were excellent and they were the eventual winners. That match resulted in a 5:2 score. Finally, we played against a Kerry team. This was a drawn game.
Our team of eight boys: Cillian, Callum, Odhrán, Shane, Noah, Dáire, Shéa and Rory played exceptionally well. They proudly paraded up to receive their 4th place medals. Many photographs were taken and they savoured the atmosphere of the pitch and the stadium.
We returned to Threemilehouse happy, tired and proud of being part of their journey to the finals. The boys got a rousing reception at the Sean Mc Dermotts Complex from their families and friends. They enjoyed delicious hot food shared with all.
This was a day never to be forgotten. Perhaps one day we will return either to watch another school team or to watch one of these boys playing for Ireland. It is good to have a dream!
Thank you to all our sponsors who made it possible for us to make the trip to Dublin.

Our Ulster Champions
It was an historic day for the pupils of St Mary’s NS on Wednesday last the 14th May 2025. Our Boys’ soccer team took part in the Ulster finals of the FAI Primary school 5s at Monaghan United in Gortakeegan. They played three games against teams from counties Cavan and Donegal. The boys played their hearts out. They had tough opposition. They showed great determination, skill, athleticism, energy and competitiveness. They also displayed sportsmanship and respect to the other players. They richly deserved to win and to be awarded a beautiful cup and medals. The best prize of all is that they progress to the All- Ireland final on Wednesday 11th June in The Aviva stadium in Dublin!
Let’s not forget the cailíní. We are very proud to say that our Girls team are the runners up in the province of Ulster in 2025. They played three very intense games in warm conditions, winning two of them. This was no easy feat. We are delighted with your achievement. You too will always remember this special day in years to come.
Much thanks and credit must be given to their coaches Mr Rice and Mr Clerkin, who have encouraged, helped and guided the boys to this stage in the competition.
Thanks to the supporters, friends and families who have turned up to all their matches. We look forward to your support in Dublin.
Thank you to Monaghan FAI, John Crudden, Pat Mc Cabe, Paul Smith and all the other volunteers who organised the Ulster finals. The event was well run from start to finish. They have sent a full report with photos to the Northern Standard.
We are now making plans for the Boys participation in the All Ireland Competition in Dublin.

TAP Programme
Third class and Cairde 3 were delighted to be given the opportunity to take part in the TAP programme recently. Over the course of 6 weeks we were lucky to have Zara Doody, a local artist, visit our school each Friday afternoon to guide us in completing our construction project.
On the first day we brainstormed and decided on the different things that we could make. We agreed on the following themes; Transport, Shops and Homes, Fashion, Parks and Playgrounds and Robots. Our challenge was to add an element of futuristic living to our projects.
During the weeks that followed, the children drew the plans for their projects in their groups. They then constructed them using a variety of recycled materials and then finally, they painted them and added the finishing touches. Each group then presented their projects to each class in the school. The classes then had the opportunity to cast their vote for which they thought was the best. In the end the futuristic bus designed by the Transport Group was declared the winner. The children thoroughly enjoyed working on their projects and learned LOTS of new skills. You can see some of the process and finished products below!

Confirmed in Light
Today you walk a faithful way, with Spirit near, you kneel and pray.
A cross is traced, a promise made, with oil and grace, you're unafraid.
The dove may fly beyond your sight, But leaves your heart with strength and light.
With every step, you're not alone, God walks with you, you are His own.

Christmas 2024
Our Christmas festivities began with a beautiful carol service themed ‘Peace on Earth’, where the pupils sang carols and shared the timeless story of Christmas. This was followed by a Christmas Jumper Day in aid of St Vincent de Paul, complete with a cosy movie and hot chocolate. To cap off the celebrations, we were delighted by a very special visitor who came to meet all our pupils.
The staff and pupils wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
